The Wisp - Home Fragrance Oils

THE WISP · OUR STORY

The Wisp started in our own house.

We're Andrea and Simon — a couple in Nottingham with two dogs, a teenage son, and a house that never quite smelled the way we wanted. The Wisp is the UK home fragrance brand we built to fix that: a cold-air fragrance oil system, curated fragrances, and none of the guesswork.

The problem: we tried everything, and spent £40 a month failing

Plug-ins were harsh. Reed diffusers were weak. Candles were lovely but inconsistent, and gone within an evening. Cushion sprays lasted five minutes. Between all of it we were spending around £40 a month on home fragrance and still never quite getting there — a house that smelled good for an hour, not all day.

The breakthrough: how luxury hotels actually scent a room

The breakthrough wasn't a fragrance — it was a diffusion method. We noticed that the hotel lobbies that smell genuinely incredible, not like an air freshener, almost universally use air-pump atomisers: small cold-air machines that nebulise pure fragrance oil into a fine mist with no heat, no carrier solvent, and no flame. Fragrance arrives in the air with its top, heart and base notes fully intact, on a programmable schedule, covering a whole room. Plug-ins and candles can't compete with that. We sourced an atomiser system we liked and built what became the Wisp Fragrance System around it.

We curate home fragrance oils. We don't compose them.

There are perfumery houses around the world that already do that work brilliantly, and the right move for a small brand was to taste, choose and curate rather than start a perfumery from scratch. So that's what we did: over several months we worked through hundreds of fragrance oil compositions from international perfumery suppliers — sniffing samples on cards, in jars, and in our own atomiser, at different concentrations, in different rooms, at different times of day. Most we set aside. The ones that survived — that smelled just as good in February as June, in the hallway as the bedroom, on a tired Tuesday as Christmas Eve — became the 31 fragrances in our range today. We named them, numbered them, and hand-bottle every one in Nottingham.

Why we tell you that

Plenty of small home fragrance brands imply they compose their own fragrances. We won't do that — it isn't how we work, and a brand built on a story that doesn't hold up is a fragile thing. What we did do — choosing carefully from hundreds of options, building a system around them, packaging, presenting and supporting them — is genuinely the work of running a fragrance brand. That's the part we want credit for.

What The Wisp isn't

We're not Jo Malone. We're not Byredo. We're not a luxury house and we don't price like one — a 10ml fragrance oil starts at £12, a 50ml at £21, and the diffuser system is the kind of investment that pays itself back against £40 a month on plug-ins. We're a small Nottingham home fragrance brand that thinks scenting a house properly shouldn't need a chemistry degree or a luxury budget.

Andrea and Simon.

“We literally tried EVERYTHING! From sprays to candles to stick diffusers to plug-ins, you name it, we tried it. And don’t get me wrong, these things work; for a while but we wanted something that would last and not cost us a fortune. We were spending over £40 a month already and we just couldn’t find anything that was strong enough to keep the whole house smelling good.”
