About Us

The Wisp started in our own house.

We're Andrea and Simon — a couple in Nottingham, two dogs, a teenage son, and a small house that always seemed to need a bit more air. We'd tried everything to make it smell the way we wanted: plug-ins (harsh), reed diffusers (weak), candles (lovely but inconsistent), even those tiny bottles you spray on cushions (gone in five minutes). We were spending around £40 a month and never quite getting there.

The breakthrough wasn't a fragrance. It was a diffusion method. We discovered that luxury hotels — the ones whose lobbies smell incredible, not like an air freshener — almost universally use air-pump atomisers: small cold-air machines that nebulise pure fragrance oil into a fine mist with no heat, no carrier solvent, and no flame. The fragrance arrives in the air with all its top, middle, and base notes intact. They cover entire rooms on a programmable schedule. Plug-ins and candles can't compete.

We sourced an atomiser system we liked, and then we set about building a fragrance range to go with it.

We don't compose fragrances ourselves. There are extraordinary perfumery houses around the world that already do that work brilliantly, and the smart move for a small brand was to taste, choose, and curate rather than try to start a perfumery from scratch.

So we did exactly that. Over months, we worked through hundreds of fragrance compositions from international perfumery suppliers — sniffing samples on cards, in jars, in our own atomiser at different concentrations, in different rooms, at different times of day. Most we set aside. The ones that survived all of that — the ones that smelled good in February as well as June, in the hallway as well as the bedroom, on a tired Tuesday as well as a Christmas Eve — became the 31 fragrances we sell.

We named them. We numbered them. We bottle them in Nottingham. We pack them into gift boxes. We answer the emails when something's wrong. The brand is the curation, the system, and the service. The fragrance compositions themselves are the work of perfumers far more skilled than we are.

Why we tell you that

Plenty of small brands in our category imply that they composed their fragrances themselves. We're not going to do that. It's not how we work, and a small brand built on a story that doesn't quite hold up is a fragile thing. What we did do — choose carefully from hundreds of options, build a system around them, package and present and support them — is genuinely the work of running a fragrance brand. That's the part we want credit for.

What we're not

We're not Jo Malone. We're not Byredo. We're not a luxury house and we don't price like one. A 10ml fragrance oil starts at £12; a 50ml at £21. The atomiser system is an investment but it's the kind that pays itself back versus £40 a month on plug-ins.

We're a small Nottingham brand that thinks home fragrance should be considered, layered, and good. If that sounds like your kind of thing, welcome.
Andrea and Simon.

“We literally tried EVERYTHING! From sprays to candles to stick diffusers to plug-ins, you name it, we tried it. And don’t get me wrong, these things work; for a while but we wanted something that would last and not cost us a fortune. We were spending over £40 a month already and we just couldn’t find anything that was strong enough to keep the whole house smelling good.”
