The Wisp - Home Fragrance Oils

Which diffusers can you use Wisp oils in? Neom Pod Mini, waterless, cold-air and HVAC

Every week someone asks us the same thing in a slightly different form: I’ve got a such-and-such diffuser — will your oils work in it? It is a fair question, and most oil sellers dodge it. Here is a proper answer, organised by how your machine actually takes oil, because that — not the brand on the front — is what decides it.

First, what kind of oil this is

Wisp oils are fragrance oils made for cold-air diffusers: machines that atomise oil into a fine dry mist using air pressure alone — no water, no heat, no wick. That family goes by several names on the box: waterless diffuser, nebulising diffuser, cold-air diffuser, scent machine, aroma diffuser. They all work the same way, and our oils are formulated for that way of working: thin enough to atomise, stable enough not to separate or clog, and composed like a perfume so the scent develops rather than just sitting there.

We have physically tested them in three machines: our own Wisp Mini and Wisp Fragrance System, and the Neom Wellbeing Pod Mini. Everything else below is about mechanism — the same technology, so the oil behaves the same way — and where we say “should work” rather than “does”, that is why. Your machine’s manual has the final word.

Machines that take a screw-in 10ml bottle

Some small cordless diffusers have no reservoir at all. The bottle is the reservoir: you screw a 10ml bottle into the base and the machine draws straight from it. Here the question is the bottle, not the oil — the neck diameter and thread have to match or it won’t seal.

Neom Wellbeing Pod Mini — tested, fits. Our 10ml bottles share the Neom bottle’s thread. They screw in, seal, and the Pod runs from them exactly as it does from a Neom bottle. No decanting, no adapter, no need to keep an empty Neom bottle. Neom’s own 10ml blends list at £25; ours are £12, and there are thirty-one of them. One honest caveat: Neom’s blends are essential-oil wellbeing blends, ours are perfume-style fragrance oils. Same thread, different idea of what a scent is for. If you bought the Pod for aromatherapy rather than for how it makes the hallway smell, we are not a substitute.

Other screw-in-bottle diffusers. We haven’t tested them, so we won’t say they fit. If yours takes a standard 10ml aromatherapy-style bottle, the odds are good — compare the threads before you buy more than one.

Machines with a reservoir you pour into

This is the biggest group and the one our oils are built for. Plug-in waterless diffusers, tabletop nebulisers, the “aroma diffuser” you bought online with a refillable tank — if it takes neat oil (not oil in water) and makes a dry mist, it is a cold-air diffuser, and the 50ml and 125ml bottles are the sizes to buy.

Wisp Mini — tested, ours. A wall plug-in with a 130ml reservoir, covering 200–250 cubic metres. Because you fill it rather than screw a bottle in, a 125ml bottle lasts a long time between top-ups.

Other cold-air reservoir diffusers. The mechanism is the same as ours, so the oil should behave the same way. The things to check in your manual: that it is a waterless machine (some “diffusers” are water-based ultrasonic machines — see the section below), and whether the maker says anything about third-party oils. Two well-known ranges people ask us about, Aroma360 and Hotel Collection, are cold-air machines of this kind; we haven’t tested them ourselves, and neither company endorses any oil but their own.

Commercial scent machines and HVAC units

Hotels, shops and salons use the same cold-air technology at a larger scale: a bigger reservoir, a stronger pump, sometimes ducted into the air conditioning. The Wisp Fragrance System — tested, ours — is that class of machine: it holds 200ml and covers 430–500 square metres, which is a shop floor or a whole ground floor rather than a room. If you run a commercial unit from another maker, the same logic applies as above: waterless, neat oil, check the manual.

Water-based (ultrasonic) diffusers

These are the diffusers you fill with water and add a few drops to. We have used our oils in one and it worked — a few drops in the tank, and the mist carried the scent. What we can’t promise is the strength. Our oils are formulated for waterless machines, where they are atomised neat; in water they are carried along rather than driven, and how much you smell depends on the diffuser, the tank size and how many drops you use. With the number of water-based diffusers on the market, all built slightly differently, no one can honestly say “works perfectly in all of them”.

So our advice is simple: buy one 10ml bottle first, try it in your diffuser, and if you like what it does, buy the rest. If it’s fainter than you’d like, add a couple more drops before deciding, and wipe the ultrasonic disc now and then as you would with any oil.

What our oils are not for

  • Reed diffusers — a different base doing a different job; ours aren’t made for reeds.
  • Oil burners, wax warmers and anything with a flame or hot plate — please don’t. Cold-air oils are formulated for air, not heat.
  • Skin, baths or candle-making — no. These are diffuser oils, full stop.

Will it affect my warranty?

We can only answer for our own machines, where the answer is no — these are the oils they are designed around. For anyone else’s, read their terms. We are not affiliated with Neom Wellbeing, Aroma360, Hotel Collection or any other diffuser maker, and none of them endorses our oils. Compatibility described here is about how the machines work, not a guarantee for every device or configuration.

Where to start

All thirty-one oils come in all three sizes, so whatever you run, the choice is the same. If you have never smelt any of them: The Wisp No.1 (peach and watermelon over coconut and chocolate), The Kingsman No.19 (cardamom and black pepper over rosewood and oud) and The Zest No.24 (lemon, lime and grapefruit over ginger) sit at three different ends of the range. Or let the Fragrance Finder narrow it down by room in about twenty seconds — no email address required.

Questions people ask

Do Wisp oils fit the Neom Pod Mini?

Yes. The 10ml bottle has the same thread and screws straight in. We have tested it. The 50ml and 125ml don’t fit the Pod — they are for reservoir machines.

Can I use Wisp oils in an Aroma360 or Hotel Collection diffuser?

They are cold-air machines, the same technology our oils are made for, so they should — but we haven’t tested them and their makers don’t endorse third-party oils. Check your manual and your warranty terms.

Can I put Wisp oil in a water diffuser?

Yes — we have, and it worked. But they are formulated for waterless diffusers, so we can’t guarantee how strong the scent will be in water; it varies with the machine and the dose. Try one bottle before you buy several.

Are these essential oils?

No. They are composed fragrance oils — built like a perfume, with top, heart and base notes. If you want single-plant essential oils for aromatherapy, that is a different product and we don’t pretend otherwise.

The Wisp is an independent Nottingham fragrance brand. Neom, Wellbeing Pod, Aroma360 and Hotel Collection are their owners’ trade marks, used here only to describe compatibility. We are not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by any of them.
