Rounder and sweeter than lemon, with less of the sour edge. Sweet orange is the cheerful one — juicy, almost edible, the smell of the peel rather than the fruit. Bitter orange is drier and more grown-up, closer to marmalade than squash.
Orange does something useful in a room that most notes cannot: it reads as warm and fresh at the same time. That is a hard combination to achieve and it is why the note turns up in winter blends as often as summer ones.
A top note, so it leads and then hands over. In a cold-air diffuser you get a good twenty minutes to half an hour of it before the heart of the blend takes the room.
