Where to use this fresh floral diffuser oil

Living rooms, hallways and bedrooms. The citrus top makes it a good hallway oil and the wood base makes it a good living-room one, which is a rarer combination than it sounds — most bright openings have nothing left an hour later. Run as a fresh floral diffuser oil in an open-plan space it holds together well, because the vetiver and cedar give it something to stand on once the lemon has burnt off.

It is also the one to reach for in a house where somebody has objected to the last floral you bought. It reads as clean and slightly austere rather than sweet, and it works particularly well in a room with wood or leather furniture in it.

Is The Free right for you?

Choose it if you want a floral that does not announce itself as one, or if you like citrus but find pure citrus oils thin and short-lived. Eleven notes with a four-note woody base means it lasts considerably longer than a straight lemon blend, and it is the driest thing in this family by some distance.

Skip it if you actually want flowers front and centre. The Feeling is the loud one — Bulgarian rose and blackcurrant, no hedging — and The Blush is the soft apple-and-peony option. Either will give you far more petal than this does.

Worth flagging: violet divides opinion. It is well buried here, sitting between jasmine and cedar, but if powdery violet is a note you actively dislike you will find it in the middle stretch.

How to use it

Cold-air diffusion only — this is a concentrated oil, not a reed diffuser refill, a candle scent or a wax melt.
