Creamy, soft and milky — the least sharp wood there is. Where cedar is dry and pencil-like, sandalwood is rounded and almost lactic, with a sweetness that has nothing to do with sugar.
Genuine Mysore sandalwood is now export-restricted and priced accordingly. Most sandalwood in modern fragrance is Australian sandalwood or one of the synthetics built to resemble it, and the better synthetics are very good indeed — smoother and more consistent than the natural material, which varies wildly by tree.
A base note with real staying power. Sandalwood is one of the few things that will still be faintly present in a room the following morning, and it is particularly good in bedrooms for exactly that reason.
