Amber is not the fossilised resin you find in jewellery — that is a stone, and it barely smells of anything. Perfumery amber is an accord, a built thing, usually labdanum and benzoin with vanilla somewhere underneath. Warm, resinous, a little sweet, slightly powdery.
It is the note that makes a room feel like it has a fire in it when it does not. Dense rather than bright, and it reads as expensive to most people without their being able to say why.
A base note, and a heavy one. In a cold-air diffuser amber builds through the evening rather than announcing itself, and it is forgiving of a low intensity setting — you often need less of it than you think.
